Key takeaways
Autumn, roughly September to November, is the best season of the year for a family photoshoot in the UK. The light is soft and warm, the landscape turns gold and amber, golden hour arrives at a child-friendly time of day, and there is a natural deadline that makes the timing perfect: Christmas cards and gifts. After twenty-five years of photographing families across NW London and the Home Counties, autumn is the season we recommend most. Here is why, and how to make the most of it.
Autumn is the best season for family photos because it combines flattering natural light, beautiful colour and comfortable temperatures all at once. The lower sun gives soft, warm light for most of the day rather than just at dawn and dusk, turning leaves create a rich gold-and-amber backdrop, and the mild weather keeps young children relaxed rather than too hot or too cold.
Summer light can be harsh and high overhead, making people squint and casting strong shadows at midday. Winter is beautiful but cold and short on daylight. Spring is lovely but unpredictable. Autumn sits in the sweet spot, which is why family photographers' diaries fill so quickly from September onwards.
Autumn light flatters families because the sun stays low in the sky, so its light is softer, warmer and more directional than the harsh overhead sun of summer. That low angle is the same reason photographers love golden hour, in autumn you effectively get those conditions for much longer through the day.
There is a second advantage. When British Summer Time ends on Sunday 25 October 2026, the clocks go back an hour, so golden hour moves from around 8pm in high summer to a far more practical late afternoon. That means you can have a relaxed session in beautiful light and still get the children home, fed and to bed on time, a small thing that makes a big difference with toddlers.
And on a grey day? Do not cancel. An overcast autumn sky behaves like an enormous softbox, wrapping everyone in even, flattering light with no squinting and no harsh shadows. Some of our favourite family images come from soft, cloudy autumn afternoons.
The practical reason to book an autumn family session is simple: Christmas. A shoot in September, October or early November gives time to edit your gallery, order prints, design an album and send personalised cards before the December rush, while a December session leaves almost no margin.
Personalised photo cards remain hugely popular. UK consumers send around one billion Christmas cards each year according to the Greeting Card Association, and a family portrait makes yours stand out. Lab and print turnaround also slows dramatically in December, so the earlier your session, the safer your timeline.
The best autumn family locations near NW London are parks and woodland with mature deciduous trees that turn colour, plus a studio backup for the weather. Tree-lined parks, heathland and country estates across Hertfordshire, Middlesex and the Chilterns all deliver golden canopies and leaf-strewn paths from late September.
Local favourites include the woods and commons around Northwood, Ruislip and Pinner, the open spaces of the Chilterns, and the formal parkland of nearby estates. We choose a spot with easy parking and somewhere warm to retreat to, which matters with little ones, and always keep a studio option ready if the forecast turns.
For an autumn family shoot, choose soft layers in muted, seasonal tones, rust, mustard, forest green, cream, denim and warm neutrals, that complement the gold and amber around you rather than clash with it. Avoid large logos, bright neons and busy patterns, which pull the eye away from faces.
Layers are practical as well as flattering: a scarf, knit or jacket adds texture and warmth and gives children something cosy to settle into. Coordinate the family without matching identically, pick two or three tones and let everyone wear a different mix. We send every family a simple what-to-wear guide before the day so nobody has to guess.
Book your autumn family session in late summer, by August or very early September, because the best weekend slots go first and the season is short. Peak colour in southern England usually runs from late October into mid-November, but light and mild weather make any autumn date worthwhile.
We deliberately limit the number of family sessions each autumn weekend so every family gets a relaxed, unhurried experience. If a Christmas-card deadline matters to you, tell us when you enquire and we will plan the date and delivery around it.
Autumn is short and the best weekends go quickly. If you would like warm, natural family photographs, in time for Christmas, tell us your preferred dates and we will plan a relaxed session around your family and the season.

Good to know
Late September to mid-November is ideal in southern England. Peak leaf colour usually arrives from late October, but soft light and mild weather make the whole window excellent, especially for young children.
Overcast light is soft and very flattering, so a grey day is rarely a problem. For heavy rain we keep a studio option ready or reschedule, and we always agree a backup plan when you book.
Soft layers in muted, seasonal tones such as rust, mustard, forest green, cream and warm neutrals work beautifully. Avoid large logos and busy patterns. We send a what-to-wear guide before every session.
Book by August or early September. An autumn session leaves time to edit, order prints and design cards before December, when print labs are at their busiest and turnaround slows.
After the clocks change in late October, golden hour falls in the late afternoon, which is perfect for families. Earlier in autumn we aim for the softer light of mid-to-late afternoon.
We use parks, woodland and country estates across NW London, Hertfordshire and the Chilterns, chosen for autumn colour and easy access, plus our Northwood Hills studio as a weather backup.
